mrs. washington was pretty cool, too

I found a few more DC pictures to share. On Friday, on our way to the vineyard, my parents, Joel and I took some time to wander through Mt Vernon. It was gorgeous (I’m curious if they ever do weddings – if not, they should!) and so moving to wander through the home of our first president. Something I learned was how amazing Mrs. George Washington was. She was such a partner to her husband and a huge part of the revolutionary movement. She would leave their amazing home every winter to bring food, clothing and encouragement to her husband and the troops. Her efforts were a big part of his success.

When I was dating Joel, I used to (foolishly) worry that it would be hard to spend my life with someone that had a PhD. I thought that maybe my accomplishments wouldn’t stand up to his … that I might be seen as lesser because of how amazing and brilliant he is. That I would never be able to do anything to compare to what he was sure to do.

After being married for years, I see how absolutely crazy that was. I’m not living as a comparison to Joel – I’m living as his partner. We’re not competing with each other, but rather each victory for us as individuals is also a triumph for the other person. I can share in all the joys (and failures) of his life, and he shares in mine. It know it sounds cliche, but it’s true.

All that to say, I’m pretty thrilled to be his Mrs. Washington.
